Leisure time in Liptov

Liptov offers a lot of skiing terrains for all categories of skiers. Besides down hill skiing you can find great opportunities for cross – country skiing and skialpinism. The most important winter sport centres are to be found in Demänovská Dolina - Jasná, Malinnô Brdo - Skipark Ružomberok and Park snow Donovaly. For those who are looking for less demanding terrains there are some other smaller skiing centres. There is a great place for skiing 12 km far from Liptovský Mikuláš in a small town Liptovský Ján. The equipment of Liptovské Revúce centre is being modernized. Near Liptovský Mikuláš there are lifts in Podbreziny, Opalisko - Závažná Poruba, Žiar Dolinky.

Liptov also offers great tourist opportunities due to good location and natural beauties. Visitors can choose from a great variety of differently demanding tourist tracks, bike riding and water tourism. Liptov is surrounded by the highest mountains of Slovakia - The High Tatra, The West Tatra and The Chočské vrchy in the north, The Low Tatra in the south, The Velká Fatra in the west and The Popradská kotlina in the east. Orientation in terrain is made easier by tourist routes.

Thanks to many hot mineral springs there can be found several famous baths and thermal swimming pools. Thermal swimming pool Bešeňová is one of the most important ones. It is filled with hot healing springs with the temperature of 60.5 centigrades. The water beneficially influences locomotive organs, expiratory organs, urological problems and has beneficial cosmetic effects. Another one is the Aquapark Tatralandia that lies north of the Liptovská Mara dam and is 2 km far from Liptovský Mikuláš. Thanks to hot thermal water it is open all year. At the moment Tatralandia offers 23 water slides, 4 of them are open all year. What is more there is an adrenaline rope centre.

The most famous summer recreational centre in region is the Liptovská Mara dam where you can go swimming, windsurfing, yachting and rafting.

Visitors in Liptov can also admire the beauty of underground cave world. Unique stalactites and stalagmites of different colours and beauty, huge stalactite and stalagmite or ice formations show the great power of nature. There are about 4 000 known caves in Slovakia and 12 of them are open to public. Three of them are situated in the Liptov region. Liptov is exceptionally rich in beauty of underground caves and that is why the region is called The Liptovský kras (karst). On the north side of the Low Tatra in the Demänovská dolina there lies the Demänovský kras where there dominates the 35 km long Demänovský cave system. There are two caves open to the public - - Demänovská ledová jeskyně and Demänovská jeskyně svobody. The second one belongs to the most beautiful open to public caves in Europe.

You can experience hoofbeat, the smell of gun powder and the charm of cancan dancers in the biggest natural entertaining centre in Slovakia – Western City Šiklův Mlýn. Everybody can move from everyday reality and routine to the tough but romantic atmosphere of Wild West.
